Shell and tube vapor condenser with removable bundle

Quote Request Form

A condenser is sized from its duty, not from a catalog page: the vapor and its rate, the operating pressure, the coolant you have and the pressure drop you can afford. Send those and you get a selection, a price and a lead time. Every quote is written by an engineer and says what it was based on.

Put the duty in the message box — vapor rate and composition, operating pressure, the condensing temperature or setpoint, and the coolant type, flow and inlet temperature. If you are replacing a unit, the nameplate and a photograph are usually enough on their own.

The Condensing Load

Vapor rate in lb/hr or kg/hr and what the vapor is. If it is steam, the pressure tells us the rest. If it is a solvent, a mixture or a process vapor, the composition matters more than the rate because it sets the condensing curve, the dew point and how much of the surface will actually be condensing. An equivalent BTU/hr from latent heat is fine as a starting point; say how it was arrived at.

Tell us whether noncondensables are present and roughly how much. Air in-leakage on a vacuum system, inerts in a reactor vent or CO₂ in a fermentation off-gas changes the vent arrangement and often the whole geometry.

Pressure and Temperature

Operating pressure: vacuum, atmospheric or pressurized, with the actual figure. Under vacuum the allowable vapor-side pressure drop is the number that decides the design, so quote it if you have it. The condensing temperature, or the outlet temperature the process needs, sets the approach to the coolant and therefore the surface.

Design pressure and temperature come next. They rarely change the size and always change the price, because they decide shell thickness and whether the unit needs a code stamp. Quote the relief setting rather than the operating pressure.

Coolant

Tower water, chilled water, glycol or air, with the flow available and the inlet temperature at the summer design case. A close approach against warm tower water is the most common reason a condenser cannot make its duty, and it is far cheaper to find that out at quotation than after commissioning.

Materials and Hygiene Class

Carbon steel, copper alloy, 304 or 316L stainless, duplex or a high alloy: condensate chemistry, not bulk vapor chemistry, should drive the choice, because the first liquid to condense concentrates whatever acid or chloride is present. Say plainly if the duty is sanitary or pharmaceutical. ASME BPE, 3-A, surface finish, drainability and double tubesheets are all decided at this point.

Orientation and Mounting

Horizontal or vertical, shell side or tube side condensing, and whether the unit mounts on a reactor nozzle or column top as a knock-back or reflux condenser with condensate running back against the vapor. Fixed connection orientation from existing pipework is worth stating, as is tube pull clearance where the bundle has to come out for cleaning.

Replacing an Existing Unit

Photograph the nameplate and send the picture. A model number from any manufacturer, with the duty it was doing, lets us offer the current equivalent. Where the nameplate is gone, measure the shell diameter and length, count the connections and note their sizes and orientation.

Quantity, Schedule and Destination

Quantity affects the price and the lead time separately, so send the real number. A need-by date tells us which selections can be built in time, and a ship-to city lets the freight go on the quote instead of arriving as a surprise.

How It Works

From Request to Quote

1.

Send the Duty

The form above, an email, or a phone call. A marked up schedule or a photograph of a nameplate works as well as a typed specification.

Nothing has to be complete. If a number is missing we will tell you which one and why it matters.

2.

We Size and Select

We rate the duty on the condensing curve and select the construction and size that carry it with sensible velocity, drainage and vapor-side pressure drop.

If two constructions fit, or clearance rules out the obvious answer, you get both options with the trade-off written out.

3.

You Get a Quote

A selection, a price, a lead time and the thermal performance it is based on, so the numbers can be checked rather than taken on trust.

Submittal drawings and ASME, CRN or BPE documentation follow on request, before you commit to the order.
